Why Drive Arizona’s Scenic Routes?
Road trips are an easy way to experience Arizona’s natural features and dramatic changes in elevation without getting exhausted. If you want to see cactus-filled deserts, red rock formations, or forested canyons, these routes make it possible to see them all (sometimes in one trip). For visitors who’d rather not hike or spend hours planning, driving is comfortable, efficient, and flexible. You can just get in the car and go!
Top Scenic Drives Near Phoenix

1. Apache Trail Scenic Drive (State Route 88)
The Apache Trail (SR-88) starts east of Phoenix and extends for about 40 miles through the Superstition Mountains. The route passes Canyon Lake and ends near the small community of Roosevelt. While part of the road is unpaved and can be rough, the initial paved section to Tortilla Flat remains open. Plan for two to three hours if you want to make stops for photos or a quick meal.
2. Red Rock Scenic Byway (SR-179)
Red Rock Scenic Byway is a 15-mile road south of Sedona, about two hours from Phoenix. The route features well-known formations like Bell Rock and Cathedral Rock. It’s easy to combine a drive with time in Sedona for hiking or dining if you want to stretch your legs! If you’re heading there on a weekend or at sunset, though, you can expect to run into heavy traffic!
3. Flagstaff to Sedona via Oak Creek Canyon (Highway 89A)
Highway 89A connects Flagstaff and Sedona, passing through Oak Creek Canyon for about 28 miles. It’s a fantastic drive in autumn when fall colors are visible, but there are still pretty views all year-round. The Oak Creek Vista is a popular spot for taking photos! The descent from Flagstaff into Sedona is particularly scenic, and highlights the shift from forest to red rock terrain.
4. Salt River Canyon Scenic Drive (US-60)
To the east of Phoenix, US-60 travels through Salt River Canyon. The drive features a series of switchbacks, river crossings, and overlooks. You’ll be grateful you’re not hiking them when you get a good look! Allow at least two and a half hours each way, and be prepared for some winding segments. Basic services are available along the route, but it's a good idea to bring water and snacks just in case.
5. Desert Foothills Scenic Drive (Scottsdale)
The Desert Foothills Scenic Drive runs for six miles along Scottsdale Road, with the Sonoran Desert’s most impressive features on display. It’s a short drive and works well if you want to see local vegetation and get some photos without leaving the metro area!
6. South Mountain Park & Dobbins Lookout
South Mountain Park is one of the largest municipal parks in the United States. You can drive to Dobbins Lookout for panoramic views of Phoenix. The road is paved, about five miles long, and open to vehicles during park hours. It’s free to enter, but it gets busy around sunset!
7. Carefree Highway & Lake Pleasant
The Carefree Highway heads northwest from Phoenix toward Lake Pleasant. Along the way, the landscape shifts from desert to the open water of the lake. Lake Pleasant Regional Park is a great place to stop for a break or food if you need it.
8. Route 66 & San Francisco Peaks
Historic Route 66 passes through Flagstaff and Williams. Pairing this with a drive toward the San Francisco Peaks allows you to see higher-elevation forests and, during the winter, snow-capped mountains. It’s about two hours north of Phoenix.
Short Drives Near Phoenix
- Piestewa Peak Drive: Quick access to city and mountain views.
- South Mountain Park Scenic Drive: Good for sunset or evening city views.
- Desert Foothills Scenic Drive: Convenient option for when you’re short on time!
Tips for Your Arizona Road Trip
- Carry water, especially in warmer months.
- Check road conditions in advance—some routes, like the Apache Trail, may have closures.
- Avoid peak times to minimize traffic; early mornings are often less congested.
- Bring a charged phone or camera for photos.
- Look up trailheads or stop locations before you go to maximize your time.
